Heroes, flaws and all — Deborah, Gideon, Samson, and a nation on repeat.
"In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own ______."
Samson's strength was never actually in his hair — it was in his vow to God. The haircut was just the last promise broken.
Deborah judged Israel from under a palm tree and led it to war when the general wouldn't go without her. Judges 4 and 5 tell it twice — once in prose, once in song.
Gideon started his story hiding wheat from the Midianites in a winepress. God's greeting? 'The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.' God saw what Gideon couldn't.
The book ends with its thesis: 'every man did that which was right in his own eyes.' Spoiler — it went poorly.
